Guilty Musical Pleasures… The Paperboys.

The PaperboysI remember the first time I saw the Paperboys, I didn’t really want to go to the show, but I didn’t really have anything better to do that night, so I thought what the heck. it was over at the Showbox across the street from Pike Place Market. A very cool venue, that after the show, a street vendor sells hot dogs that you can add cream cheese too. Yeah, I said it. Cream Cheese. Sounds disgusting, but after a few drinks, it tastes mighty good. But anyways, back to the music.

Rewind back to St. Patty’s Day in 2007. I went with my friend Stacey to the show a little skeptical. Wasn’t too sure what to expect. I listened to the opening song of the set, Molinos, and I was pretty much hooked. It reminded me a lot of a band I discovered while in high school in Canada, Spirit of the West. After the 3rd or 4th song, the lead singer introduced the band, and said he was missing one of the members, Geoffrey Kelly, as he was playing a gig with his other band… Spirit of the West. How cool was that! So I drank and danced the rest of the night, and loved every minute of it.

Fast forward to a couple of weekends ago, and I heard from my friend Carrie, that the Paperboys were playing at the Tractor Tavern. I’ve always loved seeing shows there, and so we went. And danced, and drank, and danced… Seeing them has brought me into a phase where i’m listening to a lot of country / folk / bluegrass /j am kinds of music. So in my playlist on my iPod are the Paperboys, the Avett Brothers, Clumsy Lovers, Blue Rodeo, Jim Cuddy Band, and so on and so forth… Never thought I’d be in this kick for such a long time.

For one reason or another, the Paperboys love Seattle (then again, who doesn’t? I think it’s only my parents that don’t like it here… :)) They play here 3-4 times a year, either at the Triple Door, the ShowBox, or Tractor. below is the only video that I’ve seen of theirs, “Fall Down With You”. Go see them if you’re in Seattle, or anywhere on the West Coast. You’ll like em..

Guilty Musical Pleasures… The Ting Tings…

The Ting TingsI’m not one for jumping on the bandwagon of what could be one-hit or one album wonders… But I think these guys might have grabbed my attention…

So this brit-pop duo will probably be the musical hit of the summer… And quite frankly, so be it. I’m pretty sure that you’ll hear this album being played at bbq’s, in cars… It’s just good, happy easy to listen to music… There are not a lot of layers to it, just a drum beat, a guitar, lots of looping, and simple lyrics…

I saw them this past Tuesday over at Chop Suey on Capitol Hill… and while the set was short, the music was awesome, and loved every second of it. They captivated the crowd, and the bar was packed and everyone was enjoying the beat.

Below is the vid for one of their songs, Great DJ. It’s catchy, you’ll be singing it most of the day…

Cassette From My Ex…

With the evolution of cd’s, ipods, and digital music, the art of the mix tape has died…

so coming across this site brought back some nostalgia…

You can look at the covers of said tapes, and even listen to them. Freaking awesome. It totally reminds me of being young again (not that 31 is old, mind you), but the times when i would sit and make tapes for my girlfriends, and they agony that I would sometimes go through in picking the right songs, without oversteeping my boundaries, or having the indirect meaning, or what have you… then the initial tape, then the re-tape, and the listening over and over to make sure that it’s right, make sure the songs flow in the right way. We’ve all done it. The mix tape would tell your girlfriend everything you wanted to say, but couldn’t…

the website reminded me of the season finale of the episode, with michael scott offering to make a mix tape for Holly, the new HR girl… and the scene that follows is below…

N3P cd mixtape… awesome.

Same-sex couple claims bias at Safeco Field

SEATTLE — A local lesbian couple says a peck on the lips nearly got the two of them tossed out of a Mariners game.

The women said in an arena where even chanting and screaming are allowed, they were singled out by a security guard simply because they kissed each other.

Sirbrina Guerrero says she only gave her date a peck, but a mother sitting with her son complained to security and, as a result, they were told to stop or leave.

“And he (the guest services agent) goes ‘there’s a lady whose son says he saw you guys making out, and I did, too. And you have to stop.’ And I said ‘well, we weren’t making out, but we were kissing and I’m not going to stop,’” said Guerrero.

Guerrero says the only reason she was called out was because of her sexual orientation.

“(The guest services agent said) the mom doesn’t want to explain to the kids why two girls are kissing. So I said ‘well, I’m not going to stop, so you’ll have to kick me out. So he said ’so I suggest you leave then,”‘ she said.

Safeco Field officials refused to comment on the incident. However, officials did send KOMO News a copy of the field’s code of conduct which states “displays of affection are not appropriate in a public family setting.”

But Guerrero and her friends don’t buy it. After Guerrero was flagged at the game, they took pictures of other couples who kissed but were not reprimanded. Those couples, they said, were heterosexual.

Guerrero’s friend Melissa Benavites, who was also at the game, said Guerrero did not lash out inappropriately at the security guard. She also said her friend’s reaction was not overly sensitive.

“No, no. Not too sensitive about a situation like this. I mean, it could have been handled in another way,” she said.

When asked whether she and her date were acting lewd in any way that would have prompted such a firm response from the security guard, Guerrero said, “We were eating garlic fries. The last thing we wanted to do was make out with each other. Honestly, that’s what it was.”

Stadium officials are questioning all staff members involved. They refused to discuss details, but did say their employees would never target same-sex couples.

According to MTV’s web site, Guerrero was also a contestant on the network’s reality TV show “A Shot At Love 2 With Tila Tequila.”

I mean, come on…  In today’s society, and especially living in Seattle, are there really these kinds of people that would object to a kiss between a same-sex couple?   Maybe I’m biased since I have a lesbian sister, and am friends with many gays and lesbians, but still…  There are so many other things that the M’s and Safeco Field should be worrying about… Like winning some ball games!

The best part was her comment about garlic fries…
When asked whether she and her date were acting lewd in any way that would have prompted such a firm response from the security guard, Guerrero said, “We were eating garlic fries. The last thing we wanted to do was make out with each other. Honestly, that’s what it was.”

The New Kids Hangout… Safeway?

So this past Saturday, I went out to dinner with a couple of friends over to Quinn’s Pub up on Capitol Hill… Food was delicious, just wish that the portions were bigger. Jason ordered a delicious looking scallop entree, but there were only 2 scallops on the plate… I had a buttermilk fried chicken breast… played it safe, but it was still delicious.

After leaving the restaurant around 8pm, I headed up to Target to buy a tower fan, and picked up some necessities (deodarent, contact solution…) Then went over to Safeway to purchase some items for breakfast the next morning… 1030pm, and I’m heading into the store, and the parking lot is full… of kids hanging out in the parking lot… thought that was interesting, but then walking into the store, and looked at the 2 checkout lines were backed up halfway down the aisle… I didn’t need my OJ that badly…

But really… isn’t there like a bubble tea bar or a McDonald’s parking lot close by to hang out in? What about a bowling alley?

Oh that’s right… they closed it down to build condos

The sun’s out on a Sunday…

I’m happy to report that the sun is out today…  for how long, who knows.  The iPod is playing, and it’s on my weekend playlist.  Josh Ritter is currently dialed in.

Cleaning up my place, and packing to head to Portland for a week.  Hopefully this week is a good one coming up.  It’s going to be busy, that’s for sure.

Josh’s tune “To the dogs or whoever” has me in a good mood…  a video of it is below.
